As one of the best reviewed plastic surgeons in Sacramento, Dr. Scott Green receives many consultation requests from women in Northern California who are interested in learning more about breast augmentation. In addition to being an excellent surgeon, he takes his role as a caretaker seriously, making sure his patients know what to expect from the procedure. During the consultation, Dr. Green shares what you will notice is different about your breasts following your surgery, including:

Change in Size and Shape

The goal of breast augmentation is to enhance the size of the breasts, so it should come as no surprise that the size of your breasts will be different. Although the added volume is immediately apparent after surgery, you should understand that the breasts are not finished changing. It can take months for swelling to completely subside and for the implants to settle and reveal their final size and shape. It is not uncommon for implants to settle at different rates, so if you notice some asymmetry initially, this usually resolves itself with more time.

Scarring

Scarring is an unavoidable part of surgery. To insert your implants, it is necessary for Dr. Green to make a couple of incisions that subsequently turn into scars. Fortunately, the scars are generally difficult to spot. Dr. Green makes his incisions where they are easily concealed like underneath the breast, around the areola or beneath the armpit. He uses precise technique so that the scars fade from visibility with time.

Scar tissue also forms internally around the implant. This is your body’s natural response when a foreign object is inserted. Your scar tissue should be soft and pliable. Although capsular contracture is rare, if at any point in the future this scar capsule hardens and starts to squeeze the implant, please speak to your doctor.

Temporary Difference in Breast and Nipple Sensitivity

After surgery, many patients notice that the sensitivity of their nipple and breast skin has changed. You may find that your nipples are suddenly hypersensitive, or that they feel less sensitive and numb. Given the different responses women experience after breast augmentation, the amount of sensitivity cannot be predicted. The good news is that you will probably see your normal level of sensitivity return within a few months.
