What Can You Do about Drooping Eyelids?

Although the expression “wide-eyed innocence” conveys a sense of naivety, it also connotes youth. As you get older, you may notice in the mirror that your eyes (in a very literal sense) do not appear as wide as they used to be. Drooping eyelids are a common part of aging. Thankfully, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Green offers a couple of surgical procedures designed to return your eyelids to a more youthful position.

Why Eyelids Droop

While eyelid ptosis can sometimes be attributed to medical conditions like a stroke, tumor or diabetes, more often than not drooping is the result of the normal aging process. The muscles responsible for opening the eyelids get weaker with time. Additionally, loose skin around the upper eyelids weighs down the eyelid, making it more difficult to open the eyelids widely.

In some cases, a drooping eyelid can impair your eyesight. If your eyelid is only able to open slightly, this can limit the field of vision. If you are like most people, however, eyelid ptosis is primarily a cosmetic concern because it detracts from the overall appearance of your eyes and ages your face. Having drooping eyelids can also make you seem more tired, regardless of your actual energy level.

Cosmetic Options

The main plastic surgery aimed at improving eyelid ptosis is eyelid surgery. When performing upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Green removes excess skin and fat that drag down your eyelids. He also tightens the eyelid muscles so that they have additional strength to open the eyelids more fully. Results from this surgery are subtle enough that most friends cannot recognize that you have had plastic surgery, though they will pick up on the more rested and youthful energy that your face projects.

Brow lift may also have a positive effect on the eyelids. Although its primary purpose is to smooth out your forehead and revive the youthful arch of your eyebrows, when loose skin and fat are removed from your brow, you often experience the added benefit of being able to open your eyelids more completely.

During a consultation with Dr. Green, you may discuss both surgical options. He can provide his professional opinion as to which would benefit you more. You may even opt to combine the procedures to achieve a more complete rejuvenation at the top half of your face.

Elevate those Eyelids

You may not be able to stop the aging process, but you can address some of the changes that make you look older. To discuss eyelid surgery, brow lift or any other facial rejuvenation procedure with Sacramento and Granite Bay’s finest surgeon, please call Dr. Green at (916) 929-1833.
