At What Age Should You Get Neck Lift?

Neck lift is a popular surgery aimed at diminishing signs of aging that form around the neck. The procedure commonly removes excess or sagging skin along the neck and/or removes fat from underneath the chin to minimize jowls and add definition to the jawline.

Premier plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Green regularly meets with patients who know they want to enhance the appearance of their necks but are unsure when they should schedule the procedure. In this blog, Dr. Green explains when it makes the most sense to choose neck lift.

Most Patients Have Surgery During Their Middle Age Years

Factors like genetics, sun exposure and the quality of one’s skin care routine can cause signs of aging to appear at different times for different patients. However, the majority of people notice that signs of aging like sagging and neck bands appear between the ages of 40 and 60.

Many patients pursue surgery in their 50s because that is when the signs of aging seem significant enough to warrant action. At that age, the skin still has some elasticity so your surgeon can better achieve an attractive, youthful neck contour.

It Can Be Earlier Than Other Procedures You May Consider

Neck skin is naturally thinner than skin covering other regions of the body. The neck also has fewer oil glands, which causes the skin to become less elastic sooner. As a result, the neck is one of the first areas of the body to show signs of aging — and you may consider getting neck lift surgery earlier than other popular plastic surgery procedures.

You do not have to wait until the neck looks especially old to take action. Many patients will elect to have surgery when mild to moderate signs of aging start to appear to maintain a youthful appearance. Performed by a great surgeon, the results can remain in effect for about 10 years.

There Is No “Right” Time

When it comes to cosmetic surgery, there is no one correct time. Instead, the right time to have surgery is when you want it. If you want to have it once aging really sets in after 50, that is a good choice. If you want to have it closer to age 40 before significant sagging can appear, that is also a great choice.

While some patients worry that they have ruined their one shot if they have neck lift too early, that is not the case. So long as you remain a good candidate for the surgery, you may repeat the procedure again in the future to further rejuvenate the neck.
