What You Should Know About Liposuction Surgery
Liposuction is consistently a top 5 cosmetic procedure in the United States each year. It is the direct removal of fat by the use of a small thin tube called a cannula. Best results are obtained when liposuction is used on the abdomen, flank, back or other areas where there are isolated pockets of fatty tissue. There are a variety of different liposuction procedures that can be performed depending on the characteristics of the patient and the area to be addressed. Different types of liposuction procedures that Dr. Green performs include dry technique, wet technique super-wet technique, tumescent and ultrasonic and laser technique. All of these types of procedures are effective ways of sculpting and re-contouring and each has its particular advantages. You will discuss with Dr. Green which of these procedures is best for you.
Liposuction of a single or several areas may be performed as an independent procedure, but it is routinely combined with other cosmetic surgeries such as tummy tuck, thigh lift, breast reduction and various other procedures.
Performing Liposuction in Sacramento
Liposuction is usually done under a general anesthetic but can be carried out under a local anesthetic that numbs the area. You will be awake, but comfortably sedated.
Generally it is done on an outpatient basis. For most liposuction procedures, Sacramento plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Green will inject a fluid mixture containing a salty solution, local anesthetic and adrenaline into the fatty area being treated. This helps reduce bleeding, bruising and swelling and makes it easier to remove the fat cells.
A cut will be made in your skin and a thin metal tube called a cannula will be inserted. This will be attached to a vacuum pump or a syringe and will be moved about within the fatty tissue to suck out the fat and the fluid. For larger areas, more than one cut may be made to reach all the fatty deposits that are being treated.
Once your surgeon has removed the required amount of fat, the cannula will be taken out and your cut(s) will be closed with stitches. These "cuts" or incisions are typically about three millimeters or less than 1/4th inch.
A variation of the wet technique is 'tumescent' liposuction. Sacramento men and women who choose this technique receive a larger volume of fluid injected into the treatment site.
It is typical for patients to experience some discomfort and bruising in the areas treated with liposuction. Generally speaking, modest pain medications will lessen the discomfort to a tolerable level.
The involved area is bandaged to promote healing. You should plan on keeping the bandage on for one to two weeks. Dr. Green will give you advice about resuming your normal activities but ordinarily patients can return to work within a few days and normal activities can be resumed within a few weeks. It may take a few months before the final desirable results are achieved as it can take the swelling some time to dissipate and reveal the slimmed down areas and new contours.
As with any cosmetic surgery, be sure to follow your plastic surgeons instructions regarding taking medications and vitamins, eating, drinking and ceasing smoking.
Lipostructure
This is an innovative cosmetic procedure designed to restore fullness to facial features which may have grown gaunt from aging. It is also effective in cosmetically enhancing other body parts, such as the buttocks or breasts. The procedure involves the transplant of fat from one body area to another. With this procedure, you receive the compound benefit of taking fat from an area where you don't want it, and using it to fill out areas in need. Frequently patients who undergo this procedure desire a restored fullness to features such as the chin, jaw, cheek and eyelid. The effect can be a remarkably younger, more vibrant, appearance. It is a particularly popular procedure for those patients who are looking to add fullness to their lips (lip augmentation). Others may be looking to add roundness or a more flattering shape to their buttocks (gluteal augmentation) or breasts.
